Sugar Bowl Lodge Deck Renovation & Kitchen
High in the Sierra Nevada at the historic Sugar Bowl Ski Resort, C/S delivered a two-part transformation of the Village Lodge that expanded amenities for skiers, snowboarders, and club members while modernizing the heart of the lodge's food and beverage operation.
The first phase replaced the lodge's aging wood deck with a new waterproof deck system, unlocking 5,696 square feet of new conditioned space on the ground floor below. This new space houses locker rooms, restrooms, and dedicated mechanical systems, all operating independently from the existing lodge. Built as a freestanding structure, the new multi-level deck features a hydronic snow melting system along its primary circulation paths, ensuring safe and comfortable access during winter operations. The project also included relocating the site generator, rerouting utilities, and adding new accessible parking and ramped pathways connecting the ground floor and deck levels.
While deck construction was underway, Sugar Bowl engaged C/S for a second project: a Level 1 interior renovation of the lodge's commercial kitchen and dining spaces. The scope included two new service bars, a new service corridor linking the kitchen directly to the deck, replacement of select windows and doors along the south facade, and a new accessible restroom on the dining level.
Working at elevation in the Sierra Nevada presented the typical challenges of mountain construction, including a compressed building season and the logistics of delivering materials and maintaining progress through changing weather conditions. The result is a more functional, accessible, and welcoming lodge experience for Sugar Bowl's guests and members.
